Safety & Health Expo 2009 – A great success
Safety & Health Expo 2009 – 12-14 May 2009 – NEC Birmingham, UK
19,575* industry professionals (subject to ABC Audit) descended on the NEC Birmingham for Safety & Health Expo 2009, Europe’s largest annual health and safety event. The show, which ran from 12-14 May and was opened by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Chair Judith Hackitt, was hosted in partnership with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Adrian Newton, Portfolio Director for Safety and Building Management at UBM Live, organisers of Safety & Health Expo, said: “Following last year’s event, we conducted comprehensive industry research to establish what it is our visitors wanted to gain from attending Safety & Health Expo. It was clear that professionals wanted to find out about the latest products and innovations in the market as well as receiving the most up-to-date information. We therefore introduced new and innovative feature areas which addressed the findings and were a great success.”
Alongside the exhibition which contained more than 300 industry leading names, the show introduced a number of new feature areas to compliment the established mainstays of Safety & Health Expo.
The Product and Innovation Hub, sponsored by Arco, housed a comprehensive seminar programme containing presentations from numerous industry leaders. Topics included:
• Clean Air? Take Care Campaign and Launch of the Fit2Fit Accreditation Scheme – BSIF
• 5 real benefits you can immediately gain from effective key management in your workplace – Godfrey Anderson, Traka
• E-learning during a financial downturn – Miles Walkden, Safety Media
• The evolution of head protection – Matthew Judson, JSP
• RFID for inspections – ScafftagThere were a further two dedicated seminar theatres at the event. The SHP Arena, sponsored by EEF, was introduced this year and offered high-level content which was delivered by legal professionals and senior safety professionals from end-user companies. The Working at Height Seminar Theatre, sponsored by AIF, returned this year to house an extensive educational programme focussing on key working at height issues.
Also new for 2009, the RoSPA High Ropes Course incorporated a variety of challenges 13 metres up and invited visitors to confront their perceptions of height and test their skills.
Furthermore, the new Hazardous Education Seminars, presented by DENIOS, were a huge success. With hourly demonstrations, the seminar highlighted the consequences of handling flammable materials incorrectly.
The event also played host to the BSIF Safety Awards 2009 which recognise excellence within the safety industry, excellence in customer service, product innovation and improving occupational health and safety. The 2009 winners were:
• BSIF Service Award - Guardsman Ltd
• BSIF Safety Excellence Award - Bunzl Greenham
• BSIF Product Innovation Award - BM Polyco (Metallica Cut Proof Glove)Feedback from exhibitors at Safety & Health Expo clearly demonstrate the event’s success:
Julian Roberts, Managing Director, Safety Media: “The level of enquiries has actually been better than any year that we have previously been here so it has been a superb calibre.”
Ben Powers, Slip Risk Consultant at Grip Potential Ltd, said: “Having exhibited at Safety & Health Expo, our website is now experiencing twice as much traffic as before. The quality of visitor was significantly higher than we were expecting so we were delighted to be in front of people of this calibre. We have made some valuable contacts and look forward to returning next year.”
