Silvana Martin, Laing O’Rourke’s health and wellbeing leader, strategy is to make 2019 Laing O’Rourke’s healthiest year yet by delivering key workstreams and working with employees to build their capacity and resilience.
Silvana has been instrumental in creating a culture that recognises that a proactive approach to health and wellbeing has a positive effect on employees, the business and society as a whole. For employees, there are benefits in terms of life expectancy, the longevity of employment and quality of life. For the business, having a healthy workforce means increased productivity and reduced rates of absence. For society as a whole, employer-led health and wellbeing programmes promote a healthier population, alleviating the load on the healthcare system.
Silvana has implemented a number of improvement programmes from managing key occupational health risks, lifestyle changes to improve performance, to a successful mental health programme, which has seen over 400 managers trained in how to manage mental health in the workplace. In addition, she has designed a mental health champions programme, of which the current number of volunteer champions stands at 127. Silvana led the Laing O’Rourke submission for the Mind Workplace Wellbeing Index for the ongoing commitment to creating a positive culture around mental health and for supporting employee wellbeing, of which the company was awarded Silver in April 2018.
Silvana represents Laing O’Rourke on several different clients and industry forums. Most recently she was a key speaker at the parliamentary event in the House of Commons on raising awareness of skin cancer amongst outdoor workers.
Silvana has been awarded Health and Wellbeing Leader of the Year 2018 in the Construction News Talent Awards.
